Victorian Green Wool Sport Cap, ca. 1890 – Riding, Cycling & Sailing Headwear

Construction & Materials

This rare green sport cap, dating to circa 1890, is a well‑preserved example of late Victorian headwear, possibly worn for riding, cycling, or sailing. The cap bears an English‑language label from P. Weber – Hatter – 49 N. Queen St. – Lancaster, PA, linking it to the transatlantic hat‑making tradition of the late 19th century.

Crafted from green wool fabric, the cap features a cord decoration with three metal buttons, two acorn ornaments, and a shield motif — details that suggest both sporting and symbolic significance. The interior is lined with glazed cotton, and a circumferential leather strap provides structure and comfort.

In very good condition, the cap shows only discreet signs of age and wear, retaining its original charm and functionality. Decorative items shown in some images are not included.

Historical Context & Fashion Significance

While its exact use remains speculative, the cap’s size and styling suggest it may have served as a lady’s riding cap, a boy’s sport cap, or even a sailing accessory. Such versatility reflects the evolving fashion of Victorian leisurewear, when outdoor activities became increasingly popular and specialized garments emerged to match them.

This rare 1890s green wool sport cap is ideal for collectors of antique hats, Victorian sporting attire, and museum‑quality fashion artifacts, offering a glimpse into the craftsmanship and lifestyle aesthetics of the late 19th century.
