In the history of fashion, coats of this type were known as dolmans, a term used for a Hungarian men’s jacket, a Turkish overcoat, and a distinctive sleeve form. Over time, the dolman evolved into a women’s jacket worn with bustle dresses, characterised by a long front and a short back, typically ending above the cul. This silhouette became a hallmark of late 19th‑century outerwear.

Material & Construction

This dolman is crafted from brown velvet, a fabric that may appear slightly shiny or restless in photographs due to its natural shimmer, yet in reality presents a rich, beautiful surface. The hem is adorned with large, drop‑shaped tassels, an eye‑catching decorative feature typical of the period. Additional decorative elements in the chest area also serve as functional closures.

The sleeves are pagoda sleeves with wide cuffs, adding dramatic volume and movement. The interior is lined with quilted silk, and includes a small inside pocket, reflecting the garment’s high‑quality construction.

Condition

The dolman is in good to very good condition. There is abrasion to the inner silk, especially around the collar, and wear on the decorative “buttons” in the chest area. These signs are consistent with age and use. Overall, it remains a distinctive and very beautiful antique garment that can still be worn today. Decoration not included.
