Victorian Theatrical Wig, c.1890

This theatrical wig, c.1890, made of horsehair and finished with a black silk bow, is a fine example of late Victorian stage craftsmanship. The piece originates from London and is associated with the workshop of Willy Clarkson, one of the most influential theatrical wigmakers and costumiers of the period.

Clarkson’s Wellington Street Workshop

Clarkson operated his early business at 45 Wellington Street, close to the Strand, where he supplied wigs, costumes and make‑up to nearly every major theatre in London’s West End. His workshop became renowned for high‑quality materials, lifelike wigs and innovative techniques that shaped the visual identity of Victorian and Edwardian theatre.
