WWI & WWII Archive of Willi Zunner – Marine Feuerwerksmaat Mess Jacket & Personal Documents
Provenance & Collection Overview
This remarkable WWI and WWII collection, acquired directly from Sulzbürg in the Upper Palatinate, contains personal items from Willi Zunner dating to the First and Second World War. Included are private photographs, field post letters, patriotic poems, and personal correspondence — an intimate and rare documentation of the life of a soldier from rural Bavaria. The ensemble’s completeness and authenticity make it an exceptional historical archive.
Marine Feuerwerksmaat Mess Jacket
At the heart of the collection is an exceptionally well‑preserved mess jacket of a Marine Feuerwerksmaat, dating to around 1914. Made of dark blue cloth and fitted with gold‑coloured buttons featuring the Imperial crown, anchor, and entwined rope, it is unmistakably a uniform piece of the Imperial German Navy. Its condition and completeness make it a rare surviving example of early wartime attire.
Airship Corps Connection
A studio portrait from Neumarkt/Oberpfalz shows Willi Zunner dressed formally, likely taken on the occasion of his engagement or wedding. Notably, he wears a cap with the tally “Kgl. Luftschiff Abt.”, suggesting that he may have been transferred from the Navy to the Army Airship Detachment at the beginning of the war — a common path for technically trained naval personnel.
Historical Significance
The collection as a whole is unique, both in provenance and preservation. The excellent condition of the mess jacket, combined with the personal documents, creates a vivid and tangible piece of German history from the First World War. For collectors of militaria, WWI archives, or Bavarian regional history, this ensemble represents an extraordinary and deeply personal historical record.
