Provenance & Couture Quality

This elegant two‑piece black evening gown, dating to ca. 1896, carries the label “R.A. Higgins, Pittsburg, Pa”, confirming both its provenance and its high craftsmanship. As a refined example of late Victorian evening wear, the ensemble showcases the luxurious materials and ornate detailing that defined elite fashion at the end of the 19th century.

Exquisite Chantilly Lace & Bodice Design

Both the bodice and skirt are crafted from finest Chantilly lace, celebrated for its delicate, filigree pattern. The bodice features a wide bateau neckline, elegantly framing the shoulders and lending the gown a timeless silhouette. A black cummerbund provides a striking visual accent, cinching the waist and creating a slender, elongated figure. The half‑length sleeves, trimmed with lace, add softness and sophistication.

Embroidered Skirt & Decorative Details

The skirt is richly embroidered with a poppy motif in shaded silk, blending romantic symbolism with luxurious texture. Its hem is finished with a net ruffle edged in chenille, introducing a subtle playfulness and movement. Every element—from lace placement to embroidery—reflects exceptional craftsmanship and careful artistic intention.

Condition & Museum Provenance

The gown is in very good antique condition, with only minor signs of wear: small tears in the lining, tiny holes, an open seam at the hem, and wear on the taffeta lining. These do not detract from its beauty or structural integrity. This unique piece originates from the Valentine Museum, underscoring its historical significance and museum‑quality status. Decorative items shown in photographs are not included.
