Rare Rococo Boy's Waistcoat Front, circa 1760

An exceptionally rare boy's waistcoat front dating from the Rococo period, circa 1760, and originating from France.

In the 18th century, young boys grew rapidly and often did not receive complete waistcoats. Instead, only the visible front section was made and buttoned into the jacket or coat, creating the appearance of a full waistcoat while reducing expense and allowing garments to be adapted more easily as the child grew. Surviving examples are today considerably rarer than adult waistcoats.

The present example is constructed from a finely woven textile and lined on the reverse with linen. It closes with a row of buttons, of which seven original buttons remain present, likely silver. The lowest button is missing.

As a rare surviving element of a child's wardrobe from the Rococo period, this piece offers valuable insight into 18th-century children's dress and the practical adaptations employed by affluent families.

Measurements

  • Length: approximately 40 cm (15.75 inches)

Condition

Very good to excellent antique condition.

The textile remains remarkably well preserved for its age. Minor signs of wear and age are consistent with an object dating from the mid-18th century. Seven original buttons remain attached; the lowest button is missing.

Rarity

Original Rococo children's garments are among the rarest surviving forms of 18th-century costume. Stand-alone waistcoat fronts were functional items that were frequently altered, reused, or discarded, making surviving examples exceptionally scarce today.

Only the waistcoat front is included in the sale. Decorative accessories and display items shown in the photographs are not included.
