Antique Edwardian Petticoat from the Trousseau of Lady Gillman, ca. 1911
Exquisite Bridal Trousseau Petticoat with Embroidery, Lacework and Provenance to Lady Gillman
This beautiful Edwardian petticoat, dating to approximately 1911, originates from the wedding trousseau of Lady Gillman. Combining luxurious materials with delicate handwork, it is an elegant example of the refined undergarments worn by fashionable women during the late Edwardian period.
The lower portion is constructed from lightweight white cotton, allowing the garment to drape gracefully while maintaining its intended silhouette beneath dresses and gowns. Particularly noteworthy is the carefully constructed skirt with a three-layered lower section, designed to create additional volume and fullness beneath fashionable gowns. Such layered construction was characteristic of high-quality Edwardian lingerie and helped achieve the elegant silhouette of the period.
Edwardian Bridal Trousseaux and Luxury Lingerie
During the Edwardian era, a bride's trousseau represented an important part of her marriage preparations. Fine petticoats such as this one were often hand-finished and decorated with costly embroidery, lace, and silk components. Beyond their practical function, they reflected social status, personal taste, and the high standards of domestic craftsmanship expected of upper-class households.
Examples with documented provenance are becoming increasingly difficult to find, making garments from identified bridal trousseaux especially desirable to collectors of antique fashion, Edwardian clothing, historic textiles, and vintage lingerie.
Condition
Moderately good to good antique condition.
The petticoat shows visible signs of age and use, including several stains, areas of wear, and age-related imperfections throughout. The original decorative ribbon trim is no longer present.
Despite these condition issues, the garment remains structurally intact and displays well. The embroidery, lacework, and especially the elaborate three-layered skirt construction survive attractively and continue to showcase the quality and refinement of an Edwardian bridal trousseau.
Measurements
Waist: approximately 80 cm (31.5 inches), measured flat
Length: approximately 85 cm (33.5 inches)
Provenance
From the wedding trousseau of Lady Gillman.
The documented connection to Lady Gillman adds an additional layer of historical significance and desirability, providing a tangible link to the social history and traditions of the Edwardian upper classes.
