Hat with turned-up brims on two opposite sides, creating two points. The bicorne hat developed from the tricorne hat at the end of the 18th century. It could also be worn folded under the arm. This bicorne hat comes from the oldest millinery in the world: Lock, St James Street, London. It dates back to 1662 and the hat shop still exists today.
This silk bicorne hat dates from around 1795 and is worn as a so-called ‘Napoleon hat’, i.e. the two points point to one side. Silk appliqué in the front area. Very well preserved for its age. Subtle signs of wear. The bicorne hat became unfashionable in the 1820s.
