In the 1920s, travel to Egypt had become very modern. The discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 triggered a "travel wave". It was suddenly "chic" to have been in Egypt. The pattern of Assuit or Assiut scarves is a pattern from this North African country on the Nile. Assiut is a city in central Egypt. Assuit scarves quickly became a status symbol of wealth and prosperity.
The fabric of this beautiful stole is made of pink cotton with many silver plates in a geometric Art Deco pattern. Very good to excellent condition. A few plates looks tarnished. Nevertheless, we are not sure. The colour pink is very rare for these scarves. The decoration is not included.
