A young man with blond hair, a white tie and a black frock coat. In the background the sky shines blue. White clouds are passing by.
This classicism medallion presents this young man in skillful miniature painting, safely kept behind glass. A braid of hair and a tuft of hair are inset on the back of the piece, also behind glass. Engraved mother of pearl shimmers through. Apparently this is a romantic gift of classicism, easily datable to the years around 1800 based on the man's clothing. Perhaps the locket was given as a gift to the beloved. Perhaps it was also a gift of love and remembrance to the mother. In the 18th and 19th centuries, hair was often used to make love gifts or mementos. The medallion here belongs to this tradition and was intended to preserve the connection between the giver and the recipient. Excellent state of preservation. The decoration is not included.
