Not every bustle was a big frame or a fabric pad. These metal coils were used as well. And I would think they were more comfortable and certainly lighter weight. The Indiana State Museum has a similar one they date to 1875. This would make sense under the higher waisted, softer fabric dresses of the 1870s. The spring type coil is threaded through with a waist tape with original pronged buckle. Very good condition. The tape has been tucked. The decoration is not included.
