Extremely rare nightgown of a married couple with provenance, ca. 1900. The man's nightgown and the woman's nightgown come from a very wealthy household in Zwickau (city in Germany). Both bear different initials A.S. and W.E. Since the couple married at the beginning of the 20th century, the nightgowns were probably home made or bought before that, as part of the trousseau. The man's nightgown bears a label: C.F. Bartsch jun. * Wäscheanfertigung (lingerie production) * Zwickau. The number 49 is embroidered into the woman's nightdress. Probably it was the 49th piece of clothing that was made for her (or maybe she owned 49 nightgowns). Both pieces have red borders. In the man's case they are plain, in the woman's nightdress they are opulent. Both pieces are excellently preserved and still wearable today.
