GRACE HILL Bust Bodice, ca. 1908
This bust bodice is a highly unusual garment, representing a pre-cursor to the modern bra. Brand: Grace Hill, USA, ca. 1908. Bust bodices was designed to wear over the top of the corset to smooth the contours under the blouse or dress and to control and shape the bust, which was largely unsupported over the low, hip-confining corset. This bodice is made of lattice of figured silk ribbon, curving together at the bottom of the breast for shape and support. The ribbon sits on a ground of lace, which also trims the top. It was worn over both the chemise and the corset. Shoulder straps of figured silk attached to the bodice. Front closure with hooks and eyes. Original lacing on the backside. Metal clasp with a patent from August 1878. Excellent condition. Very rare to find. A museum piece. The decoration is not included.
