This leather chatelaine spectacles case is German and dates to circa 1890. In Victorian times the lady of the house would wear a chatelaine belt, attaching to it all sorts of useful items – scissors, notebook, pin cushion and even her reading glasses in their case. A length of chain is attached to both sides and they hold the clip which has similarly lavish ornamentation on the front. The plain clip behind it is hinged but not springy but it attaches easily to a waistband or belt. Good condition. There is some wear. Very rare to find.
