In winter, the lady let herself be driven to shopping or visits with a sleigh. Or she simply rode the sled for pleasure - as a kind of sport. Dressed in winter clothes and wrapped thickly in blankets, she was able to brave the cold. Only drawings from this time document these sleigh rides with horses. This dress is one such winter sleigh dress that is part of an ensemble. Origin: America, ca. 1880. The ensemble consists of dress, cape, hat and muff. Dress and cape are made of a brown woolen fabric; decoration with fringes. Typical bustle of the bustle dresses of this period. Very well preserved. All buttons present on the top. Small watch pocket. A couple of moth holes, of little consequence.
The muff is a mink muff, in good condition. The hat is straw, reminiscent of military headgear in its manufacture. Decorated in the back with two bows of dark brown ribbed silk. Very rare to find. Excellent state of preservation. Usually thick woolen scarves were worn over it to make the driving wind more bearable. The decoration is not included.
