Two-piece travel dress made of brown silk and silk in the color "café au lait". It was worn in the United States around 1879. The dress comes from the Valentine Museum, America. The jagged elements, which are the eye-catchers of both the overdress and the underdress, are striking. Front closure of the overdress with mother-of-pearl buttons (one requires special attention). Small side pocket for a watch. Typical "cule de Paris" for the dresses of this period. Elaborately pleated at the back. Decorative mother-of-pearl buttons are used here. The underdress is made of 2/3 glazed cotton. The dress is in good to good condition. There are two larger tears (vertical) in the glazed cotton of the underdress, but these are not visible (thanks to the overdress). A few seams of the overdress have become "threadbare", i.e. there are no tears, but seams that could come undone if pulled harder. Very, very few tiny stains. Watch chain and brooch are not included.
A handbag matches the dress. The bag is made of (beaver?) fur, which can also be used as a muff. Metal clasp. The small key is still present, which is very rare. Signs of age and wear. Very rare.
