Spencer jacket from the early 19th century, ca. 1815. Made of cream-coloured cotton. High waist. Long sleeves. Peplum on the back. Probably a summer jacket worn over the thin muslin dresses of that time. Good to very good condition. A small hole on the left side, in the area of the chest cutout. Somewhat yellowed. Rare to find. The decoration is not included.
This jacket owes its name to the English count George Spencer (1758-1834), who - according to legend - shortened his coat after scorching it at the fire. The new style corresponded to that of a short military jacket. A short time later the ladies also began to imitate this style.
