Rococo Stays, Germany, ca. 1740

 
Tightly laced bodice or corset, ca. 1740. Worn to make the waist appear as narrow as possible and at the same time to press the bust still on top. This bodice was worn as outerwear. It is too elaborate for that and was made with expensive materials. It was visible under the manteaux. It is sleeveless, but is closed with straps over the shoulder. Lacing at the front and back. Fish bone sticks or possibly wooden sticks. Made of brocade silk, in the typical pattern of the 18th century. Decorated with ribbons of metal lace, which is slightly tarnished. Lined with cotton/wool. "Scales" or peplum made of leather and the fabric of the bodice. The laced bodice was probably worn with an stomacher. For the age: Excellent condition. One open seam, low abrasion on the front sticks, replaced lacing, small missing parts in the silk. Very, very rare to find. The decoration is not included.

The stays comes from a German collection. The origin Germany is therefore correct - seen from today's point of view. In 1740 there was no Germany yet. The country was divided into principalities, grand principalities, duchies, kingdoms.
