Antique-Gown

Rococo Pockets, ca. 1740

A pair of 18th century linen rococo pockets/tie pockets (ca. 1740) on a linen waistband tape, embroidered with floral motifs in yellow, brown and deep pink wools.

As the skirts become more capacious into the 18th century, the tie pockets became more and more popular. Women kept their personal belongings in these bags. Like e.g: Purse, sewing kit, wallet, smelling salt tin, perfume bottles, handkerchiefs and keys. They had a vertical opening in the middle of the front. These robe pockets were often worn over the upper petticoat. They were reached through a slit on the side of the dress or skirt. There are very few illustrations or prints of these bags, and even fewer have survived.

Provenance: The Penrose Estate, Porthleven, Cornwall (England).

Condition report: Excellent condition. Although there are a few 'spots' most of the marks would seem to be the inked design. The decoration is not included. Very, very rare to find.
