A basque is an item of women's clothing. The term, of French origin, originally referred to types of bodice or jacket with long tails, and in later usage a long corset, characterized by a close, contoured fit and extending past the waistline over the hips. It is so called because the original French fashion for long women's jackets was adopted from Basque traditional dress.
This bodice or short jacket is made of cream silk, which has a decoration in green, black and blue colors. Long sleeves (in sabot form) with the finest lace from the 18th century. So-called "compress closure" in front by means of five buttons. Semi-circular neckline. Collar trimmed with bouillonné ruffles. Lining in cream linen fabric. For the age: well preserved. Some stains and minor tears in the silk. Probably replaced buttons. The peplum of the jacket seems to have been altered. Nevertheless: a unique garment, probably made for a young girl because of its size. The jewelry is not included in the package.
