Two-piece gown in Polish style (Robe á la Polonaise) worn in France, ca 1780. The dress consists of a silk skirt and an overdress made of a cotton-silk mixture. The skirt is laced at the side in the waist area. It has a small train. The fabric of the overdress is printed with small flowers. The skirt part of the overdress is divided into three parts. Two poke-like extensions attached to the front-sides and lined with gauze on the inside, and a back "apron". This tripartition of the skirt (overdress) is thought to be responsible for the naming of these dresses, as the partitions of Poland began in 1772, when the Robe á la Polonaise came into fashion. The overdress must have been altered at a later date, probably for a costume ball. The lace on the collar and sleeves, as well as the hooks and eyes used to close the bodice, must have been added at this time. For draping, we attached the skirt to the overdress with safety pins. In the Rococo period, ribbons were taken for this purpose, which were fastened at the waist. For the age: good to very good condition. The overdress has a few stains. One missing part in the area of the closure. Very rare to find. The decoration is not included.
