Antique-Gown

Ivory silk brocade with self pattern and polychrome floral sprays, altered c. 1780, probably originally a sacque, carefully pieced with short-sleeve bodice, drawstring neckline, linen lining with laces, trained skirt over petticoat with side ties. B-36, W-32, L 54-59, petticoat W-38, L-38. Purchased from Amy Pleadwell, Boston, 1960, dress originally had a note from a Mrs. Mansfield, pinned to the dress in 1829. It said the dress had been worn by her grandmother at a reception given by Martha Washington at Mount Vernon, not found with dress. Excellent condition with a few flaws: Small holes, two repairs in skirt, some seam separation, very minor spots, train hem some soil. The decoration is not included.
Provenance: Helen Larson Collection. Helen Larson was a collector based in Whittier, California. She owned a successful film costume rental business and amassed a world-renowned private collection of historic fashion. She was a brilliant connoisseur and historian.
