Rare Pierrot jacket from the rococo period, ca. 1770. Origin: England. According to the style it is a Pierrot à l'Anglaise. Made of water blue silk. Semicircular neckline. Long sleeves decorated with pleated silk. Two buttons each to close the sleeves. Front lacing. Moderately well preserved. The front part of the Pierrot jacket is probably missing. Maybe it was worn with a stomacher. Minor tears in the silk. A few repaired areas. Very rare to find.
About the term Pierrot jacket: Pierrot means "sparrow" in French. Thanks to the strong emphasis on the breast and the small peplum at the back, the women looked like "little birds". The association with sparrows was then (perhaps) obvious.
