Two-piece antique dress, ca. 1888, a dinner dress with a French label: Mmes Constance & Hermence, 12 Rue Halevy Paris, Pres la Rue de la Paix. The dress is made of bronze-coloured ribbed silk. The colour combination with the red-flowered ribbed silk on a pink background is captivating. We think it's a successful combination. The breast insert in the bodice is reminiscent of 18th century dresses with their stomacher. Long sleeves with pink silk cuffs. Small crocheted decorative buttons to fasten (one missing). The skirt is cut asymmetrically; it ends in a train. The front and back of the skirt are joined together with a large knot. A stylistic element that we have never seen on a dress before. Box-pleated cotton organdy dust ruffle with lace. In very good condition. Minor underarm stains; subtle signs of age and wear; discoloured hem. The dress comes from the collection of the Valentine Museum, America. The proceeds will be used for conservation and future acquisitions.
