Chantilly lace cape from the 1860s. Origin: England. What is very rare: the Chantilly lace is not black, but light (cream or eggshell-coloured). Capes of this type are very rare.
This cape is also characterised by the fine tulle ground, the floral patterns and the many details. There are light decorative grounds between the motifs. The cape is in very good condition. A few stains, a few small holes.
Chantilly lace is (originally) handmade bobbin lace, named after the place of its origin, the French town of Chantilly in the department of Oise. The famous silk lace first became known in the 18th century. Chantilly lace was also produced in the 19th century, but then mainly came from Bayeux in the north of France and from the Belgian town of Geraardsbergen.
