In the history of fashion, coats of this type were called dolmans. Dolman (in older spellings rarely also Dollmann or Dollman) is the name for a men's jacket of the Hungarian national costume, for a Turkish overcoat and a sleeve form. This jacket has developed into a women's jacket for bustle dresses. The jackets/coats are long at the front and short at the back. They usually ended above the cul.
This dolman, from the James Shoolbred department store in London, is embroidered from top to bottom, making it very heavy. Decorated with silk fringes on the large pagoda sleeves, on the stand-up collar and in the area of the front closure. The hem of the dolman is decorated with hanging fringes made of glass beads and glass pins. The inside is lined with quilted silk. The dolman is in good condition. The glass beads and glass pins have been lost over the years. But there are still enough left. A tear/open seam in the crook of the left arm. This can be repaired. An open seam on the right sleeve also needs to be repaired. All in all: a very beautiful and distinctive antique garment that can still be worn today. The decoration is not included.
James Shoolbred and Company was a draper and later a department store, located on Tottenham Court Road, London.
