Black and Taupe/Mauve Faconne Velvet Dolman with Ostrich Feather Trim, ca. 1888. American Label: Connell * Chicago. Every well-dressed Victorian woman owned at least one fancy velvet dolman or mantle.... it was the pashmina or poncho of the times! Many were lavish and highly decorated and this is no exception. This dolman is made of black velvet. But it's the beauty of the flocked faconne velvet in a highly stylized leaf motif that is so special.. in a pinky taupe and moss green edged in black velvet... has the look of stained glass! Trimmed in black ostrich feathers, lined in black satin. Excellent condition with perhaps some feather loss. Tiny seam tears of lining at collar. The decoration is not included.
