A superb antique bustle travelling cloak / manteau dating to the 1880s - a rare piece of outerwear in excellent condition. A coat / cloak hybrid, one piece, in a wool blend with an all over plaid check - beige with browns and reds - giving a distinguished, British country pursuits aesthetic. The cloak buttons all the way through at the front with self fabric covered buttons and two hooks on the smart collar. Around the shoulders the fabric is smocked in bronze thread, creating gathered fullness at the shoulders, falling in deep vertical pleats at the front and stitched at the bottom, with slits for the arms. At the back the fabric is also smocked in the small of the back, creating the bustle shape - inside self ties at the waist secure the back of the garment to the body to give the correct silhouette. The cloak is designed to sit over a relatively modest bustle (not included). At the front is military style passementerie decoration - two medallions bound with thick thread in deep red brown, with a plaited cord finished with a weighted tassel. Very slight wear. One of the ' medallions ' is damaged - the inner frame is snapped in two places. The decoration is not included.
