Stola made of guipure lace, ca. 1880; this and similar stoles were worn over bustle dresses of the 1800's to "dress up" these dresses. The stole was worn in the style of a collar: simply put over it. Excellent condition. A few "pulled" threads. The stole comes from an old collection of lace. Very rare to find. The decoration is not included.
Guipure lace is a type of bobbin lace. It connects the motifs with bars or plaits rather than net or mesh. Guipure is a French word. It used to describe lace which has a gimp or thicker thread to outline the pattern, but this is no longer used.
