Antique summer dress made of thin cotton, ca. 1910, origin: America. Made in the style of a lingerie dress. These dresses get their name from the material used. They are called ‘lingerie dresses’ or ‘lingerie dresses’ because the materials used (cotton and light lace) and decoration techniques (lace, embroidery, piping) were originally used for petticoats, chemises and other forms of lingerie. These dresses were mainly worn by younger women.
The dress is characterised by lace inserts (with various manufacturing techniques, including Schiffli embroidery), long sleeves with flounces, a stand-up collar, various pleated sections of the dress and implied ‘braces’ in the bodice. In good condition. The dress has some minor tears - especially in the collar area. The jewellery is not included.
Schiffli embroidery is a Swiss invention: ‘Schiffli’ is the Swiss word for weaving shuttle. In 1863, Isaak Gröbli developed the first Schiffli machine in the Swiss town of St. Gallen. Nowadays, Schiffli embroidery is mainly produced in Asia and Turkey.
