The designation on the sole reads: Plimsoll. This refers to sneakers, i.e. sneakers with canvas uppers and rubber soles, the rubber sole of which shows a circumferential narrow stripe and is reminiscent of Samuel Plimsoll's load line on ships, invented in 1876.
Along with rubber boots, sneakers were a distinctive item of the Phoenix Werke in Harburg, Germany, which was founded in 1856. Made of rubber-soaked canvas, they were more waterproof and elastic than leather shoes.
These sneakers are unworn and in excellent condition. Tarnished eyelets. Replaced laces.
