An American fashion museum brought this to our attention: the red cloche may be a rare leather automobile hat from the 1920s. They have a similar one in their collection and carry it there in the "sports department".
Extremely rare cloche from the fashion salon of the Callot Soeurs. Callot Soeurs opened in 1895 at 24, rue Taitbout in Paris, France. It was operated by the four Callot sisters: Marie Callot Gerber, Marthe Callot Bertrand, Regina Callot Tennyson-Chantrell and Joséphine Callot Crimont. The eldest sister, Marie, was trained in dressmaking, having earlier worked for Raudnitz and Co., prominent Parisian dressmakers, and they were all taught by their mother, a lacemaker. The sisters began working with antique laces and ribbons to enhance blouses and lingerie. Their success led to an expansion into other clothing.
This antique cloche is made of burgundy leather. Refined cut. Inside lined with color coordinated silk. Very well preserved. Discreet traces of wear. Fashion accessories, like this cloche hat, were sold matching the dresses - under the own label. Very, very rare to find.
