Events, costume balls and celebrations were held all over America to mark the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth. Many people dressed up. The dress we are presenting here was probably worn in 1932. The label reads: ‘George Washington Bicentennial Costumes * New York’. The cut was authorised and is reminiscent of a dress from the early 18th century.
The fabric of the dress is a floral-printed cotton fabric decorated with perforated lace on the semi-circular collar and half-length sleeves. Stiff (woven) fabric is attached to the inside at the hips to create the shape of the skirt. Side fastening with press studs. A hanging Watteau pleat on the back.
In very good condition. Probably only worn once. The decoration is not included.
