Elegant outer or evening jacket made of green velvet. It was bought and worn in New York in the 1920s. We date the jacket to around 1925, label: Franklin Simon & Co. Long gathered and pleated sleeves. Stylish collar that is stuffed on the inside so that it retains its shape. Pleated on the inside. Fastened with silk tie strings. These are attached on the inside (and slightly fragile). The jacket was probably worn open. In good to very good condition. Some discolouration, minor stains, inner silk (lining) has a few tears. Velvet is difficult to photograph as the camera ‘dramatises’ every imperfection. The jacket is beautiful and still carefully wearable today. The decoration is not included.
Franklin Simon & Co. was a New York City-based department store chain specializing in women's fashions and furnishings. The chain was founded in February 1902, as Franklin Simon Specialty Shops by Franklin Simon (1865-1934) and his business partner Herman A. Flurscheim. The store's concept was "to import much of his merchandise [from Europe] with a view to selling the imported goods as cheaply, if possible, as the domestic."
