For a long time, it was the epitome of children's fashion: the sailor suit. Generations of boys ran through the streets in them. Girls wore the equivalent: the sailor dress. Queen Victoria gave her grandson Wilhelm of Prussia (later Emperor Wilhelm II) a sailor suit. In the meantime, photography had become widespread and with it the image of little Wilhelm in a sailor suit. The suit first spread in courtly circles and was then adopted by the people. The triumphal march could begin. From the 1880s, the first combinations for girls were also added. Around 1900, even young ladies adopted the sailor collar. During the reign of Wilhelm II, sailor dress probably experienced its greatest popularity in Germany. From 1880 to around 1930, the garment was a phenomenon throughout Europe.
This sailor's dress probably dates from 1906. The antique dress is a one-piece. The ensemble also includes a sailor's cap, a bib, a sewn-on tie and a sailor's collar. In very good condition.
