Summer day dress, dated summer 1911. Label: Paris, 3rd Rue de la Paix * Paquin * London, 39th Dover Street * Étè 1911. Jeanne Paquin, also known as Madame Paquin (* 1869; † 1936) was one of the first female fashion designers. She helped shape the fashion scene of her time for over three decades. After training as a dressmaker in the Parisian fashion salon of Christoph Drecoll, Jeanne Paquin founded her own fashion house at 3 Rue de la Paix in 1891. Her customers included celebrities such as the Queen of Belgium and Wallis Simpson. She was known for luxurious evening dresses in delicate, finely coordinated colors, fur-trimmed costumes and coats as well as a collection of tango dresses, with which she caused a sensation in 1913.
A day dress from your salon is therefore an absolute rarity. But the customer wanted a dress like this - and she got it. The dress is a three-piece consisting of a chest insert, a top and a skirt. A belt completes the distinctive look. We “found” and purchased the umbrella, which is included, together with the dress. The dress is made of cream-colored silk and richly decorated with color-coordinated lace. Asymmetrical front section of the skirt (made of lace and silk). Decorated at the sides with crocheted buttons. Cascading silk at the back; walking slit. The top is also decorated with lace and crocheted buttons. There are also trimmings and appliqués. The dress is in good condition. It has a few stains (which are difficult to photograph) and subtle signs of wear. The umbrella, which is an addition, has a few tears. The pearl necklaces are not included.
