A beautiful lingerie dress, ca. 1903, origin: America. These dresses get their name from the material used. They are referred to as “lingerie dresses” or “dessous dresses” because the materials used (cotton and light lace) and decoration techniques (lace, embroidery, piping) were originally used for petticoats, chemises and other forms of lingerie. These dresses were mainly worn by younger women. And they were almost always white.
This dress, which we present here, is a true masterpiece of the tailoring art of the time. Made from the finest cotton net, it fascinates with its ornate ribbon lace appliqués and decorative, thread-trimmed ring buttons. The antique, one-piece dress with a round neckline and elbow-length sleeves trimmed with delicate lace ruffles exudes simple elegance. The small train and tiered hem flounce give it a graceful silhouette. Although the silk underdress, which we have added and which plays no part in the pricing, is chipped and in poor condition, this does not detract from the charm and value of the overdress. The few tiny holes, discolorations and open seams are hardly noticeable and do not detract from the overall appearance of the dress. All these details underline the historical value and rarity of this exquisite piece, which found its way to us from the renowned Valentine Museum in America. The decoration is not included.
