Elegant evening coat made of Battenberg lace, ca. 1904. Origin: England. Coats of this type were worn over evening or opera dresses. They were airy, covering the dress, but not completely, so that much of the opulence of the dresses could still be seen. Excellently preserved. These coats are rarely found in this length. The black dress and the bag are not included.
Though some types of tape laces may be traced to the 16th century, Battenberg (also Battenburg) lace was first created when Queen Victoria of England named her son-in-law as the first Duke of Battenburg in the late 1800s. Thus, a new style of tape lace called Battenburg was invented and became quite popular.
