Art Nouveau Mauve Silk Afternoon or Reception Gown, ca. 1910

Art Nouveau gown in a mauve and white silk print with the label: “Mlle. * J. Franken * 35 Breevort PL* Brooklyn”. The antique dress has an chest inset in ivory crewel embroidered net with a stand collar and a chiffon ruffle at the top. Rose coloured silk ribbon edges the top neckline with tiny bows down the front. Crewel embroidered net across the chest. Pleats fall from the shoulders to the front and back midriff beneath the wide embroidered midriff yoke. Large button detail on the front and back. Gold embroidered stars are in the centers of each button. Long, inset sleeves fall with tucks around the arms. Ivory lace border at the forearm and around the wrists. Button detail at the center back with ribbons and silk medallion tassels at the bottom. Mauve silk taffeta lining and underskirt. The Art Nouveau dress is in very good condition, only the underskirt is beginning to shatter. Chiffon lining to the lace is also shattering at the chest yoke. The decoration is not included.
