Elegant reception dress, ca. 1906. English label: Alexander Scott Ltd * Halifax. This antique art nouveau dress is a one piece. It is made of mint green ribbed silk. This is covered with lace in the skirt area, in the manner of an overskirt. On the top, the chest and back area is beautifully decorated with lace, hanging pom poms and fabric flowers. Half-length sleeves made of lace, also decorated with pompons and with flowers. U-shaped chest area, which has a small lace edge. Here is a color-coordinated ribbon of silk or cotton pulled through. Very well preserved. Underarm stains. The decoration is not included.
Scott, Alexander (1839-1919) Born in Brechin, Scotland. He was a boot dealer, draper, mantle manufacturer, milliner, silk mercer and hosier. In 1873, he acquired the business of F. H. Nicholson & Company at 25 Crown Street, Halifax and carried the business on in his own name, Alexander Scott Limited. In 1903, the larger York Buildings in Commercial Street was built as a department store for him. The business closed down when he retired (28th February 1919). He lived at Stafford Place, Halifax (1919).
