Quilted winter cape from the luxury department stores' Harvey Nichols, ca. 1890. The cape is lined; the high stand-up collar is lined with lambskin. There are two small side pockets on the inside - you could hold the front of the cape closed with your hands to protect you from the cold and wind. The outside of the cape is decorated with gold-coloured pearl embroidery. But only half of it. The upper half consists of cut-out and sewn-on appliqués. Both create a uniform pattern. The cape is in very good condition on the outside. Inside, the lining shows subtle signs of wear in the form of abrasion. Minor stains. Still wearable today.
The department store Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge was founded in 1831, and now still sells fashion collections for men and women, fashion accessories, beauty products, food and wine.
