We were quite astonished when we draped this petite wedding dress. The measurements would fit a girl aged 15 or 16 at most. And then we did some research. At the end of the 19th century, it was still common in America for very young girls to be "given away" by their fathers to much older men at the altar. From today's perspective, this practice may be criticised, but back then it was part of normal social life. This antique dress is therefore an absolute rarity. And perfectly preserved.
The antique dress is made from cream-coloured, patterned silk. Subtle puffed sleeves and discreet cul. Silk stand-up collar. Pleated bust section. Sleeves and skirt are decorated with gathered sections of silk. Heavy skirt with a small train. Two to three smaller patches. The decoration is not included.
