Four-piece bicycle ensemble, ca. 1898, origin: America. This very rare ensemble consists of:
- A pair of linen trousers, more precisely: bloomers, buttoned at the front. Inside the note: Imported Fabric. The pants are buttoned at the front. In very good to excellent condition. One button on the back pocket is missing. Subtle signs of wear
- Bicycle boots, American label: Julius Saul, Albany, N.Y. The boots are a successful combination of Leider and brown corduroy velvet. Replaced laces. In good condition. Discreet abrasion in the leather of the toe tips, minor scratches.
- A hat made of brown velvet. Decorative bows made of gray silk. Decorated with sequins and steel beads at the edge. In good condition. Some sequins missing.
- A top made of brown patterned silk. The collar, cuffs and belt are made of green velvet. Very beautiful decorative buttons. Reinforced inside with corset stays. In good condition. Subtle signs of age and wear. Abrasion in the silk (e.g. in the area of the arm bends). The decoration is not included.
At the end of the 19th century, cycling was only affordable for the upper middle classes. The first women on bicycles came from wealthy families and it was one of the only ways to escape the restrictive customs and traditions. It was a new freedom that was possible for women thanks to the bicycle.
