Rare Extra-Long Edwardian Evening Gloves in White Kid Leather, c. 1890–1905
Elegant Opera Gloves in Fine White Goatskin with Silk Ribbon Decoration
These exceptionally beautiful antique evening gloves date from approximately 1890 to 1905 and represent the height of elegance during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Designed as opera-length gloves, they were intended for formal evening occasions, including balls, receptions, theatre visits, and opera performances.
The gloves are crafted from fine white kid leather (goatskin), a luxurious material highly prized for its remarkable softness and ability to mould comfortably to the wearer's hands and arms. Through natural body warmth, kid leather gloves became increasingly supple during wear, creating the close, elegant fit that fashionable women desired.
Adding further distinction is the beautiful orange silk embroidery, which provides a refined contrast against the white leather. Matching silk ribbons complete the sophisticated design and reflect the high level of craftsmanship typical of quality accessories from the turn of the century.
Opera Gloves and Belle Époque Fashion
Long gloves were an essential component of formal dress during the Belle Époque and Edwardian era. Etiquette often required ladies to wear gloves for evening occasions, and opera gloves extending above the elbow were considered indispensable for grand social events.
Kid leather was especially favoured for its luxurious appearance, durability, and ability to retain a smooth, elegant silhouette. Decorative embroidery and coloured ribbon embellishments such as those found on this pair were frequently used to elevate gloves from functional accessories to fashionable statements.
Today, original examples in such impressive length remain highly sought after by collectors of antique fashion, Edwardian costume, historic accessories, and museum-quality textiles.
Condition
Very Good Antique Condition
The gloves display only subtle signs of age and wear consistent with careful use over more than a century.
One of the original silk bows is missing from a glove, and there is minor wear commensurate with age. Nevertheless, the gloves retain their exceptional visual appeal and remain a remarkable survival from the period.
