Edwardian Costume Ensemble, ca. 1906 – Earl of Suffolk, J. E. Wood
Historical Context & Provenance
This antique Edwardian costume ensemble, worn by J. E. Wood, Earl of Suffolk, was created for a costumed ball in 1906, where all attendees were required to appear in elaborate dress. The Earl purchased the outfit from Skewes Bros., 21 Clare Street, Bristol, a known maker of theatrical and formal costumes of the period.
The ensemble consists of a black velvet jacket and trousers, richly decorated and designed to impress at a high‑society event. As a documented garment worn by a titled British aristocrat, it represents a rare survival of Edwardian costume culture.
Construction & Materials
Both jacket and trousers are made of black velvet, embellished with:
-
hanging metal threads
-
sequins
-
colorful glass stones
The burgundy red collar is embroidered with metallic threads, while the cream‑colored silk lapel is decorated with embroidery and coloured stones. The jacket is lined with gold‑colored silk, whereas the trousers are unlined, typical of theatrical or special‑occasion garments.
Condition
The ensemble is in moderately good condition, with:
-
wear to the embroidery on the burgundy collar
-
a worn blue silk interior of the collar
-
stable velvet and intact decorative elements
Despite these age‑related signs, the garment remains a rare and historically significant piece that has survived the test of time.
