Elegant Antique Edwardian Beach Dress in Blue-Striped Silk, ca. 1914
Beautiful Seaside Dress in Fine Striped Silk
This charming Edwardian beach dress, dating to approximately 1914, is a wonderful example of fashionable leisurewear from the years immediately preceding the First World War. Crafted as a one-piece dress from fine cream silk with delicate blue stripes, it combines practicality with the understated elegance characteristic of the period.
By the early twentieth century, seaside holidays and resort visits had become increasingly popular among the middle and upper classes. Specialized garments such as beach dresses allowed ladies to enjoy coastal promenades and outdoor activities while maintaining a stylish and respectable appearance.
Refined Design and Original Details
The dress features a front and side closure secured with buttons and snaps, allowing for a tailored fit while preserving the smooth silhouette typical of Edwardian fashion.
A particularly attractive feature is the broad waist and belt area, which elegantly emphasizes the figure while maintaining comfort and ease of movement. Decorative glass buttons adorn both the bodice and cuffs, adding subtle sparkle and sophistication.
Accompanying the dress is a delicate lace collar, which remains present but is not sewn onto the garment, allowing the future owner to display or attach it according to preference.
The combination of soft striped silk, decorative buttons, and an elongated silhouette creates a graceful and highly wearable example of early twentieth-century resort fashion.
Edwardian Beach and Resort Fashion
Around 1914, beach attire differed considerably from modern swimwear. Fashionable women typically wore lightweight dresses made from practical yet elegant materials that balanced comfort with social decorum.
Silk beach dresses such as this example were often worn for seaside promenades, garden gatherings, resort visits, and informal daytime occasions. Their lighter construction and softer colours distinguished them from more formal city attire while retaining a distinctly elegant appearance.
Today, surviving examples in silk are considerably rarer than their cotton counterparts and are highly sought after by collectors of Edwardian fashion, historic resort wear, and museum-quality textiles.
Condition
Very Good Antique Condition
The dress is exceptionally well preserved for its age.
We found only one tiny hole in the silk, while the overall structure, colour, and presentation remain remarkably attractive. The garment displays beautifully and has survived in a condition rarely encountered for silk dresses from this period.
