Antique Assuit Shawl, Egypt, 1920s – Light Cotton, Silver Plates & Art Deco Geometry
Egyptomania & 1920s Travel Culture
This beautiful antique Assuit shawl, dating to the 1920s, is a striking example of Egyptian‑inspired Art Deco fashion. Following the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, a wave of fascination with Egypt swept through Europe and America. Travel to Egypt became a symbol of sophistication, worldliness, and modern elegance.
The pattern of Assuit (or Assiut) shawls originates from Assiut, a city in central Egypt. These shimmering textiles quickly became status symbols, worn by fashionable women who embraced the exotic allure of the Nile and the geometric aesthetics of the Egyptian Revival.
Construction & Materials
This shawl is crafted from light‑colored cotton, adorned with numerous silver plates arranged in a geometric Art Deco pattern. Each metal element was individually pressed into the textile, creating the characteristic sparkle and movement that made Assuit shawls so desirable in the Roaring Twenties.
The shawl is in good to very good condition, with only minor signs of age. Decorative items shown in some images are not included; only the shawl is for sale.
Historical Context & Fashion Significance
Assuit shawls were worn with evening dresses, flapper ensembles, and travel attire, blending ancient Egyptian motifs with modern Art Deco design. Their metallic shimmer and airy cotton base made them ideal accessories for dance, nightlife, and cosmopolitan travel.
Authentic 1920s Assuit shawls are highly sought after by collectors of antique textiles, Egyptomania fashion, and museum‑quality accessories. This example offers a glamorous glimpse into the interwar fascination with ancient cultures and modern design.
