Antique Quilted Silk Handbag, England – Amphora Shape, Early 20th Century
Construction & Materials
This elegant quilted silk handbag, made in England, features a distinctive silhouette reminiscent of a softly rounded Greek amphora. The upper edge is finished with a beautifully pleated border, giving the bag a sculptural, refined appearance. Both the front and back display a carefully quilted floral motif with a central blossom and surrounding leaves, adding texture and decorative depth typical of early 20th‑century silk accessories.
The bag closes with a metal frame clasp, topped with a faux tortoiseshell fastener that enhances its vintage charm. The handle is made of matching silk, completing the harmonious design. Inside, the bag is lined with playful pink silk, a luxurious detail that contrasts beautifully with the warm brown exterior. Despite its age, the handbag is preserved in very good condition, with the materials retaining their colour, softness, and structure.
Historical Context & Craftsmanship
This piece is a fine example of English craftsmanship and a rare survival of early 20th‑century quilted handbags. Its preserved materials, decorative quilting, and sculptural silhouette make it an exceptional representative of refined vintage silk accessories from the period.
