Edwardian Wedding Coat, ca. 1908 – Camel Wool & White Soutache Passementerie
Historical Context & Provenance
This camel‑colored fine wool wedding coat, dating to around 1908, is an exceptional example of Edwardian ceremonial outerwear. It features elaborate white raised braided scrollwork soutache passementerie, a hallmark of luxury garments from the period. The coat originates from the Collection of A.T. Jones & Sons, a renowned American costuming house known for preserving high‑quality theatrical and historic clothing.
Material & Design
Crafted from fine camel‑colored wool, chosen for its warmth, softness, and elegant drape, the coat has a long, loose‑fitting tapered back drape, creating a dramatic skirt‑like silhouette typical of Edwardian wedding attire. A small cape collar made of damask fabric adds texture and refinement.
The long sleeves feature a flared puff at the shoulders, enhancing the period silhouette. The front closes with crochet buttons, which remain in excellent condition. Inside, the coat is fully lined in cream silk satin, providing warmth and luxurious comfort.
