This cream wool cape, dating to ca. 1866, is a beautifully preserved example of mid‑19th‑century American outerwear. Originating from the Museum of the City of New York, it reflects the refined craftsmanship and understated elegance typical of post‑Civil‑War fashion. The cape features a decorative hood made of red China silk, adding a striking contrast to the soft cream wool. Both the hood and the front are adorned with tassels, the latter serving as functional ties for closing the cape.
The garment remains in very good to excellent condition, with only minor stains across the front, a few frayed tassels, and tiny scattered holes—all consistent with its age and museum provenance. The decoration shown in some images is not included. Measurements: shoulder approx. 20" (51 cm), length approx. 39" (99 cm).
As an authentic example of 1860s American fashion, this cape offers collectors and historians a rare glimpse into the textile choices, silhouettes, and decorative elements of the era. Its combination of cream wool, red China silk, and tassel detailing makes it a valuable piece of 19th‑century costume heritage.
